Darwin, October 08: U.S. President Donald Trump said on Wednesday that he deserves to win the Nobel Peace Prize, while expressing doubts that he would receive the 2026 award.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump said he did not know what decision the Norwegian Nobel Committee would make when it announces this year’s winner on Friday.
“I don’t know what their decision is going to be,” Trump said, adding that the committee had a “reputation for maybe not giving it to people like me.”
“It is about that time,” Trump said in the Oval Office, referring to the upcoming announcement.
Trump has repeatedly said since returning to the White House for a second term that he deserves the prestigious award. He said he should receive it for intervening in eight conflicts since taking office in January last year.
The leaders of Cambodia, Israel and Pakistan have said they nominated Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, although those claims cannot be independently verified.
Trump also referred to an unusual gesture by Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. Machado gave her Nobel medal to Trump in January as she sought U.S. support for her political efforts in Venezuela.
However, Trump’s claims about his diplomatic achievements have faced challenges. Parties involved in some of the conflicts he says he helped resolve have disputed his role, while fighting has resumed in some areas, including the Democratic Republic of Congo and along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
Trump has also failed to fulfill his promise to end the Russia-Ukraine war. He had pledged to bring the conflict to an end on the first day of his second presidential term, but the war has continued.
Meanwhile, U.S.-Israeli military strikes against Iran have contributed to a broader regional crisis, affecting global energy supplies and pushing up gas prices.
Among those considered possible contenders for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize are Pope Leo, the International Criminal Court and the United Nations special rapporteur on the Palestinian territories.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee is scheduled to announce the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize winner on Friday.
