BNP Faces Grassroots Revolt: Nomination Backlash Challenges Tarique Rahman’s Leadership Ahead of Election

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is grappling with a severe internal crisis just weeks before the general election, as a widespread grassroots revolt challenges the authority of its high command over the recently announced nominee list.

Since unveiling candidates for 237 constituencies on November 3, local leaders and activists in nearly three dozen seats have ignited protests, demanding that the party replace nominees with their preferred local candidates.

The unrest directly defies the directive of acting chairman Tarique Rahman to maintain party discipline. This defiance comes despite thousands of district leaders having previously pledged support for the high command’s choices in a September meeting.

Political analysts, including Prof Al Masud Hasanuzzaman of Jahangirnagar University, attribute the crisis to systemic issues:

“Since Tarique Rahman is not in Dhaka and is communicating with leaders virtually, the outcome has not been satisfactory, as face-to-face discussions are crucial in such matters,” he noted, citing poor coordination and communication.

Warning that the unrest could harm election performance, the professor also suggested the party ignored RPO provisions, fueling resentment.

In response, the party has taken initial punitive action, expelling at least nine leaders from the party and its affiliated organizations in two districts for participating in the demonstrations.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has publicly appealed for patience, assuring leaders who missed nominations of “due respect and responsibility” within the party.

A standing committee member, speaking anonymously, confirmed the party is now reviewing controversial nominations and engaging in talks.

“We have already reviewed several applications seeking changes to nominees. We will calm the situation soon and take strict action against anyone who defies the party’s decision,” the member stated.
