Child Rescued from Deep Tubewell Pipe After 32 Hours in Bangladesh

Darwin, 12 December:

A two-year-old child named Sajid, who had fallen into an abandoned deep tubewell pipe in the Tanore upazila of Rajshahi district in Bangladesh, was rescued after 32 hours. However, he was found dead. Dr. Barnabas Hasdak, the Upazila Health Officer, declared him dead at around 9:35 PM on Thursday.

The incident occurred when Sajid, the son of Mohammad Rakib from Koel Hat East Para village, fell into the hole while walking with his mother on Wednesday afternoon.

The child was found unconscious by fire service personnel around 9 PM on Thursday after nearly 32 hours. He was immediately taken to the hospital.

Dr. Barnabas told the media, “The child we had been trying to rescue for the past two days arrived at our upazila health complex at 9:35 PM. Upon arrival, we couldn’t find any response from him. We checked his vital signs, such as pulse, blood pressure, and respiration, but none of these were responding. After providing initial oxygen, we began the necessary procedures, but the child showed no response. Therefore, at 9:40 PM, we declared him dead.”

In response to a question, Dr. Hasdak added, “The child had passed away some time earlier. Based on his condition, we can understand that he had been dead for quite a while.”

When asked whether the child had received oxygen, the doctor said, “It is difficult to say exactly what condition the child was in while inside the tunnel. We cannot determine how much oxygen he had received or what the situation was like in there at this moment.”

Regarding the presence of any injuries on the child’s body, Dr. Hasdak mentioned that there were no marks of injury, only dirt on his body. His eyes were open.

Confirming the child’s death, Tanore Upazila Executive Officer Naima Khan stated, “We will now hand over the child to his family. There are no legal complications in this case. The district administration will provide the necessary mental and other support to the child’s family.”
