New Agargaon Graffiti Sparks Victory Day Reflection on Freedom and Protection

Shuddho Graphiti

DHAKA: A powerful new piece of street art from the Subodh series has appeared on a wall in Agargaon, Dhaka, reigniting public reflection on the state of the nation on the occasion of Victory Day. The iconic work, associated with the anonymous artist known only as HOBEKI?, carries an undeniable message for the nation.

The timing and location are highly strategic. Agargaon is where the series first captured the national imagination in 2017. The re-emergence here traces a conceptual return to the series’ roots, deliberately reconnecting the present national moment with the original themes of struggle and hope.

Subodh, previously seen in August 2024 near the Dhaka University Metro Station, has often served as a metaphor for the country’s “good sense” or “conscience” struggling against socio-political pressures. This latest appearance seems to signal an “unfinished conversation” about the meaning of Bangladesh’s hard-won freedom.

In the new mural, the character adopts the guise of a soldier, but his mission is one of peace. He is depicted kneeling to tenderly kiss the forehead of a little girl who holds the Bangladesh flag, while his military helmet rests on her head.

This imagery fundamentally reinterprets the concept of the fighter. Subodh’s chosen tools—a bundle of paintbrushes and spray cans—replace weapons of war, embodying the artist’s belief that creativity and compassion are the true forms of protection. The figure acts as a guardian, suggesting that the spirit of the Liberation War must be protected not just by force, but by a continuous, gentle act of care for the future generation.

By choosing Victory Day, HOBEKI? has once again bypassed traditional media to use the urban landscape as a canvas for critical discourse, prompting citizens to consider not just the sacrifice of the past, but what freedom requires of them today.
