Homicide Police Investigate Death at Villawood Detention Centre

Sydney

SYDNEY: A major police investigation is underway in Sydney’s west this morning after a 51-year-old man was found dead at the Villawood Immigration Detention Centre.

Emergency services were summoned to the facility at approximately 6:35 AM on Monday following reports of a man discovered with critical injuries.

NSW Ambulance Paramedics arrived on the scene shortly after the call; however, the man was found with a “serious wound” and could not be revived. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

A crime scene has been established within the complex. Due to the nature of the injuries found, Homicide Squad detectives have taken the lead in the investigation to determine whether the death was the result of foul play or self-inflicted harm.

Police have confirmed that the deceased was a 51-year-old detainee. While the investigation is in its earliest stages, authorities have not yet released information regarding the type of weapon involved or the specific circumstances leading up to the discovery.
