EXCLUSIVE : For Sam Kerr, the accolades of being one of the world’s greatest footballers are now taking a backseat to a much more demanding role: motherhood.
In an exclusive chat with nine.com.au, the 32-year-old Matildas captain and Chelsea F.C. striker revealed how her perspective has shifted since welcoming her first child, Jagger Mewis-Kerr, in May 2025 with her wife, fellow football star Kristie Mewis.

Motherhood has provided the prolific goal-scorer with a sense of grounding that the high-pressure world of professional football rarely affords. “It makes you realise there is more to life than all the little things you worry about,” Kerr shared.
While Kerr’s career is defined by her own excellence, she admits she has been most moved by watching Mewis, 34, adapt to her new role. “Watching Kristie become a mum has been the best thing ever. I tell her all the time I knew she would be a good mum, but she’s smashed my expectations.”

The public is getting its first real look at the youngest member of the Kerr-Mewis household via the new Bonds Good to Grow campaign, which features the mother-son duo. Despite being only eight months old, Kerr says Jagger is already showing a distinct personality.
“He is a very happy baby… never really cries and is very stubborn,” Kerr joked. “He is only eight months but already bossing us around!”
While Jagger’s parents are both titans of the pitch, Kerr says they aren’t forcing him into the “family business” just yet, though they hope he inherits their drive. “I do hope he is into sport. We don’t mind what sport, we just hope he has the passion for sport like we do. Loving what you do is most important.”
As the pair balances professional careers in London and international duties, Jagger remains their primary focus, proving that for this footballing powerhouse, the most important team is the one they’ve built at home.
