Darwin,  13 February:

According to the unofficial results of the 13th National Parliament election in Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has secured a clear majority and is set to form the government for the first time in two decades.

Out of 299 parliamentary seats, candidates running under BNP’s “Sheaf of Paddy” symbol have won 212 seats. Meanwhile, candidates from Jamaat-e-Islami Bangladesh have secured 70 seats.

Smaller parties and independent candidates have won 6 seats, while results for the remaining constituencies are still being finalized.

Among the prominent winners, BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman achieved a significant victory margin in his constituency. Jamaat-e-Islami’s Amir Shafiqur Rahman also won decisively in Dhaka-15.

The last time BNP formed a government with a majority was in 2001 under the leadership of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. After the end of that tenure in 2006, the party remained out of power for nearly 20 years.

This election is historically significant as Jamaat-e-Islami is set to become the main opposition party in parliament for the first time.
