Darwin, 26 March:

At least 20 people have been killed after a passenger bus plunged into the Padma River at Daulatdia ferry ghat in Rajbari district, Bangladesh.

The accident occurred on Wednesday (March 25) around 5:15 PM when a bus traveling from Kumarkhali in Kushtia lost control while boarding a ferry pontoon and fell into the river.

Rescue teams, including divers and a salvage vessel, were deployed shortly after the incident. Despite rough weather and stormy conditions hampering operations, the sunken bus was eventually recovered from the river.

Authorities confirmed that the death toll has risen to 20, including 14 women and 6 men. All recovered bodies have been taken to Rajbari Sadar Hospital. Some victims reportedly died after being taken to the hospital with injuries.

Rescue operations are still ongoing, with officials fearing that more bodies may be found. A list of missing persons is being prepared.

The government has formed two separate investigation committees to determine the cause of the accident. Both committees have been instructed to submit their reports within three working days.

Authorities also announced financial assistance for victims’ families. An initial amount of 25,000 BDT will be provided for each deceased person’s burial, while injured individuals will receive 15,000 BDT in immediate support.

Officials stated that further steps will be taken to rehabilitate affected families once the full extent of the tragedy is confirmed.
