PROVIDENCE, R.I. : Brown University is set to release early-decision admission offers at 7 p.m. EST Wednesday evening, just days after a devastating mass shooting on campus left two students dead and nine others wounded.
The Ivy League institution delayed the notifications, originally scheduled for Monday, as local and federal authorities continue a massive manhunt for the suspect, who remains at large. The shooting, which occurred late Saturday, has prompted significant questions regarding campus safety and the vulnerability of even the most elite academic institutions.
Recognizing the “fear and anxiety” surrounding the current environment, university spokesperson Brian E. Clark stated that the school is prepared to work with admitted students who may be reconsidering their commitment.
“For any admitted student who reaches out with concerns about moving forward with matriculation, we’ll work with them individually and personally to determine the right solution,” Clark said.
Under the Early Decision (ED) protocol, applicants typically sign a binding agreement to attend if admitted. However, the university’s offer of flexibility suggests a departure from standard policy in light of the extraordinary circumstances.
Industry experts note that while the tragedy is profound, the release of decisions is a critical operational milestone. Elite schools like Brown rely on ED applications to fill approximately half of their freshman class and secure stable tuition revenue.
Daniel Lee, co-founder of Solomon Admissions Consulting, emphasized that these decisions are foundational to the university’s fiscal and academic planning. Despite the tension, admissions consultants suggest that the “Ivy League draw” remains strong enough that most admitted students will still choose to enroll once the immediate threat is resolved.
