DHAKA : The Bangladesh government has officially declared that there is “no viable environment” for the national team to participate in the upcoming T20 World Cup in India. Speaking at a press conference on Monday, Youth and Sports Adviser Prof Asif Nazrul cited a recent International Cricket Council (ICC) security assessment as the definitive proof that the team’s safety cannot be guaranteed across the border.
According to Prof Nazrul, a letter from the ICC security team to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) identified three specific factors that would spike security risks for the Tigers:
The inclusion of the star left-arm pacer in the squad.
Supporters wearing the Bangladesh national team jersey in public.
The proximity of the tournament to Bangladesh’s national election.
“If the ICC expects us to form a team by excluding our best bowler or to ask our supporters not to wear our national jersey, there can be no expectation more absurd,” Nazrul stated.
The Adviser confirmed that the ICC had proposed shifting matches to alternate Indian venues, such as Kerala. However, the Bangladesh government has flatly rejected this. “If the venue is changed from Kolkata to somewhere else, that does not solve the problem. India remains India,” he said, emphasizing that the “extreme communal environment” is a national issue, not a local one.
Bangladesh is now demanding that the tournament be shifted to a neutral location, such as Sri Lanka, the UAE, or Pakistan. Nazrul warned that the ICC must prove it is a global organization and not “subservient to India’s wishes.”
“A sport or a tournament cannot be decided solely on the basis of market management,” he added, confirming that a copy of the ICC’s security letter would be released to the media at an appropriate time to justify Bangladesh’s stance.
