Melbourne, July 17— A tense situation prevails in Gopalganj, Bangladesh, following a daylong bloody clash and casualties surrounding a rally organized by the National Citizen Party (NCP), a political party formed by former student leaders of the mass uprising. To restore order, the local administration imposed a 22-hour curfew from 8 PM on Wednesday (July 15) to 6 PM on Thursday (July 16).
According to local sources, tension had been mounting since Wednesday morning over the NCP’s pre-announced program. As the day progressed, clashes broke out in various parts of Gopalganj between NCP activists and members of the ruling Awami League and its student wing, Chhatra League. Eventually, the violence turned deadly.

At least four people were confirmed dead from gunshot wounds, according to local witnesses. Many others were injured.

Dr. Jibitesh Biswas, superintendent of Gopalganj General Hospital, confirmed the deaths. He added that 15 people are currently receiving treatment at the hospital, while three critically injured individuals, including Ramzan Munshi, have been transferred to Dhaka.
To control the situation, the district administration declared a curfew in the town starting Wednesday night. Police have been deployed at all major entry points to the city. During the curfew, law enforcement agencies are patrolling key intersections, using loudspeakers to urge residents to stay indoors.

NCP Leaders Take the Stage After Chhatra League Attack
However, on Thursday morning, some daily wage earners and laborers were seen on the streets for emergency needs. Public movement remained significantly low, with occasional rickshaws operating in parts of the city.
The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gopalganj Sadar Police Station did not provide specific comments regarding the clashes, cases, or arrests, stating only, “The situation is being monitored. All necessary steps will be taken to maintain law and order.”
Meanwhile, a climate of fear and anxiety has gripped the city in the aftermath of the violent clashes.
