Rupert Murdoch to Launch New Newspaper Called The California Post

Melbourne, August 5—Rupert Murdoch, known for his sensational headlines and bold tabloid-style journalism through the New York Post, is now turning his attention to California’s West Coast. After nearly 15 years, he is set to launch a new daily newspaper in the United States—titled The California Post.

According to Reuters, the newspaper’s main office will be based in Los Angeles. Sean Giancola, publisher and CEO of the New York Post Media Group, confirmed that the new publication is expected to launch in early 2026. The paper will operate as part of the New York Post Media Group.

Analysts suggest that Murdoch’s company is seizing the opportunity created by the ongoing decline of the Los Angeles Times. With a shrinking readership and a staffing crisis, the LA Times is struggling—creating a potential opening for a new competitor.

“We’ll bring to The California Post the familiar mix we call ‘common-sense journalism’,” said Giancola. “It’ll feature rich coverage of entertainment, celebrity news, sports updates, and local politics.”

In addition to its print edition, the new paper will be active across mobile, desktop, social media, and audio platforms.

Giancola also noted that content from the New York Post already reaches seven million readers in California, including three million in Los Angeles alone—suggesting there is already a strong base of potential readers for the new publication.

A source within News Corporation confirmed that Rupert Murdoch, the company’s chairman emeritus, has approved the project.
“In this business, you don’t launch a newspaper without the blessing of the best,” the source said.

The last media venture News Corp launched in the U.S. was The Daily, a digital-only newspaper designed for Apple’s iPad in 2011. However, it was shut down within a year.

Reuters reached out to a spokesperson from the Los Angeles Times for comment, but they did not respond.
