Messi Sets Unique Record by Scoring in Seven World Cup Matches

Darwin, 28 June : Argentina captain Lionel Messi is once again making football history in the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, reaching a series of remarkable milestones and further cementing his legacy as one of the greatest players of all time.

Carrying forward his exceptional form from the 2022 World Cup, Messi has now scored in seven consecutive World Cup matches. After scoring in the knockout stages of the 2022 tournament and continuing his scoring run in the opening matches of the current edition, the Argentine star has surpassed legendary records previously held by Just Fontaine of France and Jairzinho of Brazil.

Messi extended his scoring streak by finding the net against Jordan, breaking long-standing records and strengthening Argentina’s campaign to defend their World Cup title.

His consistency across consecutive matches has also seen him break a 72-year-old record, becoming the first player in history to score multiple goals in three consecutive World Cup matches.

Earlier in the tournament, Messi scored a hat-trick against Algeria and followed it up with a brace against Austria. These performances came after his brace in the 2022 World Cup final against France, highlighting an extraordinary run of form on football’s biggest stage.

The Argentina captain has also set a new all-time World Cup scoring record, taking his total to 18 goals and overtaking Germany’s Miroslav Klose to become the outright highest scorer in World Cup history.

His hat-trick against Algeria also made him the oldest player to score a World Cup hat-trick at 38 years and 357 days, adding another historic achievement to his career.

In addition, Messi surpassed Klose’s record for the most World Cup match wins, reaching 18 victories at the tournament.

He also became the first male footballer to feature in six different FIFA World Cup editions, further extending his unmatched longevity at the highest level.

With goals and assists combined, Messi’s World Cup contribution now stands at 24, surpassing the previous record held by Brazilian legend Pelé.

Messi’s record-breaking performances continue to drive Argentina’s pursuit of glory, as he once again proves decisive on football’s biggest stage.
